Brown discharge before period

1. Menarche (First period)

Menarche refers to the occurrence of the first period. This can be quite irregular in the first few years.

Many girls experience unscheduled menstrual periods and spotting. This is due to the hormones that stimulate the uterus from time to time. It causes the uterus to shed its lining at odd times.

This is normal as the uterus will get used to the hormones. Then, in no time, regulate menstruation.

2. Leftover blood from your last period.

Your menstruation may have flowed for fewer days than normal. This can cause some blood to remain in the uterus. The body expels the blood at a later time as old blood. This can mix with vaginal discharge to form brown discharge before period.

3. Implantation bleeding (Early sign of pregnancy)

Implantation bleeding or spotting is an early sign of pregnancy. It occurs at about 10-14 days after conception. Spotting a few days before the start of your period, may indicate you are pregnant.

Implantation bleeding or spotting is when the fertilized egg burrows into the wall of the uterus. This can cause some degree of bleeding or spotting because some tiny vessels rupture in the process.

More than 30% of patients say there are some differences between implantation bleeding or spotting and menstrual flow.

The spotting blood is darker than period blood. The texture is discharge-like and occurs with abdominal cramps at same time.

4. Ovulation spotting.

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary. This is a monthly experience in women of reproductive ages.

Ovulation spotting is normal for women and occurs 1-3 days into ovulation. The color is pale pink. Do not mistake this type of spotting with menstrual spotting!

5. You may have inserted something into your vagina.

Vaginal injuries may occur when you insert an object into your vagina. This may be a finger, penis, tampons etc. Having sexual intercourse when your vagina is not well lubricated, can cause vaginal lacerations.

A small vaginal opening or large penis can cause bruises. Deep penetration can traumatize the cervix leading to spotting. Brown discharge before period can occur when the blood mixes with normal vaginal discharge.

6. Emergency Contraceptives: Brown discharge while on the pill. Could I be pregnant?

Emergency contraceptives are birth control pills taken after unprotected sexual intercourse. This can affect the level of Estrogen in the body. One thing you should note is that, changing, starting or stopping birth control pills can lead to spotting. Spotting is a common side effect of these birth control pills.

Your periods should get back to the normal routine within six months.

7. Pre and postmenopausal spotting

Just like Menarche, the period around menopause is marked by irregular menstrual flow.  You may have heavy flow in some months while others, just spotting. Spotting may occur a few days before your period. This can lead to brown discharge before period.

The changes during menopause are as a result of changes in your hormone levels.

8. Can stress cause brown discharge?

You may have stressed yourself lately. It is important to note that stress can affect every part of your body. Stress can affect the release of Estrogen that is vital in your menstrual cycle. This hormonal imbalance can distort your cycle and cause you to spot before your period.
